Afghanistan, Nov. 17 -- An Iranian lawmaker has called on Afghanistan to release water from upstream dams to address Mashhad's critical drinking water shortage as reservoir levels plummet.

Iranian lawmaker Nasrollah Pezeshmanfar has called on Afghanistan to release water from upstream dams to address a severe drinking water shortage in Mashhad, Iran's second-largest city.

Pezeshmanfar told state news agency IRNA that he had discussed the matter with Iran's First Vice President to coordinate the release of at least 200 million cubic meters of water from the Harirud River dams during the winter season.
