Afghanistan, Jan. 21 -- Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan, a prominent Pashtun leader of India's independence movement against British colonial rule, passed away 37 years ago on January 20, 1988. The Indian National Congress honored his legacy as a non-violent leader.

Known as a close ally of Mahatma Gandhi, Khan advocated for non-violent civil disobedience and unity between Muslims and Hindus. His commitment earned him the title "Frontier Gandhi" due to his work in the British Indian Frontier region.

Khan, also called Bacha Khan among Pashtuns, founded the "Khudai Khidmatgar" movement to promote education and end tribal conflicts in British India's northwest, now Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The movement grew into a significant anti-colonial force.
