Afghanistan, Jan. 8 -- Germany's foreign minister said NATO would remain united, stressing continued U.S. backing as essential for the alliance's stability and global security role.

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said NATO would remain united and continue to play its central role as a collective defense alliance, dismissing doubts about the bloc's cohesion.

Speaking on Wednesday at a joint press conference in Paris with counterparts from India, France and Poland, Wadephul said he had no doubt that NATO members stood together in the closest possible alliance.
