Germany granted citizenship to nearly 292,000 people in 2024, marking a historic 46% increase compared to the previous year, according to data released by the German Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). This surge in naturalizations is the highest ever recorded in the country.

On June 10, Destatis reported that 291,955 individuals were granted German citizenship. Among them, more than 83,000 were Syrians and at least 10,000 were Afghans. Many Syrians who fled their country during the 2015-2016 war have now met the eligibility criteria for naturalization.
