Afghanistan, Nov. 3 -- German police arrested a 22-year-old Syrian man in Berlin suspected of planning a jihadist-inspired attack and possessing materials for explosives.

German officials announced on Sunday the arrest of a 22-year-old Syrian man in Berlin, suspected of preparing a serious violent act motivated by jihadist ideology.

The suspect was apprehended on Saturday in the Neukolln district and appeared before a judge the following day, with authorities issuing a pre-trial detention order against him.

In a joint statement, Berlin's police and prosecutor's office said the man is suspected of "preparing a serious act of violence against the state" and "spreading propaganda connected to illegal terrorist organisations".
