Afghanistan, Sept. 16 -- Officials in northern Afghanistan have confirmed that fiber-optic internet services have been suspended in Balkh province following an order from the country's leadership.

Haji Zaid, spokesperson for the Balkh governor, said on Tuesday the restriction was imposed to prevent "immoral activities" and that authorities are considering alternatives.

Residents of Mazar-i-Sharif, the provincial capital, reported that Afghanistan Telecom and other cable internet providers were cut off on Monday, leaving only mobile data services available.
