Afghanistan, Nov. 11 -- The UN's FAO warns a deadly livestock disease threatens over 21 million sheep and goats in Afghanistan, prompting urgent vaccinations.
The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has sounded the alarm over the rapid spread of a deadly livestock disease threatening more than 21 million sheep and goats across Afghanistan.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, FAO said the Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) virus, known as small ruminant plague - is a highly contagious disease that could devastate rural livelihoods if left unchecked. The organization warned that Afghanistan's fragile agricultural system is already under strain from drought, loss of pasture, and limited veterinary support.
