Afghanistan, April 13 -- Unrest is growing in Pakistan's Sindh province as widespread protests erupt against the proposed Cholistan Canal project. Civil society members-including lawyers, students, farmers, laborers, and political representatives-have voiced strong concerns over what they perceive as unequal water distribution that could adversely affect the Indus River and its dependent communities.
The Cholistan Canal, part of Pakistan's $3.3 billion Green Pakistan Initiative (GPI), was inaugurated on February 15, 2025, by Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir and Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.
