Afghanistan, Aug. 13 -- Pakistan's health authorities confirmed 42 polio-positive sewage samples in July, raising concerns over increased virus circulation and highlighting the urgent need for nationwide vaccination efforts.

Pakistan's National Institute of Health (NIH) announced Tuesday that the wild poliovirus was found in 42 out of 117 sewage samples collected from 87 sites nationwide in July. Health officials say the country is witnessing a notable rise in polio cases.

According to the NIH's polio eradication laboratory, of the 127 total samples collected, 75 tested negative, 42 were confirmed positive, and 10 remain under laboratory analysis. Positive samples accounted for 36 percent of all tests, up from 32 percent in June.
