Afghanistan, Dec. 14 -- Two U.S. soldiers and an American interpreter were killed in an ISIS attack near Palmyra, Syria, while supporting ongoing counterterrorism operations.
The U.S. Department of Defense confirmed that the attack occurred on Saturday, December 13, near the city of Palmyra in Homs province. Three other Americans were wounded during the ambush by an armed ISIS operative, who was killed in the ensuing firefight, CENTCOM said.
Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell stated the soldiers were conducting a meeting with a key local leader as part of operations against ISIS. The incident is under thorough investigation, and the identities of the victims will be released to family members before public disclosure.
