Washington, May 12 -- U.S. President Donald Trump has claimed that his administration played a crucial role in brokering a ceasefire between India and Pakistan, crediting trade diplomacy for defusing tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.

Speaking about the development, President Trump called it a "historic event" and praised the leadership of both nations for showing resilience and wisdom during a dangerous period of conflict.

"On Saturday, my administration helped broker a full and immediate ceasefire - I think a permanent one - between India and Pakistan, ending a dangerous conflict of two nations with lots of nuclear weapons," Trump stated.
