New York, Jan. 4 -- New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has strongly criticised the United States for capturing Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, calling the move an "act of war" and a serious violation of international law.

Mamdani's reaction came after US President Donald Trump announced that American forces carried out a military operation in Caracas and detained Maduro along with his wife. Trump also said the US would oversee Venezuela during a transition period.

In a statement, Mayor Mamdani said he was briefed about the US military action and the decision to hold the Venezuelan president and his wife in federal custody in New York.
