The disaster triggered flash floods and landslides that swept through the mountainous region around noon on Thursday, leaving behind widespread destruction.
Chositi, the last motorable point on the route to the revered Machail Mata shrine, was bustling with pilgrims when the disaster struck. The annual yatra, which began on July 25, draws thousands of devotees each year, with many camping at this village before beginning the 8.5 km trek to the temple located at 9,500 feet.
