TOKYO, Aug. 4 -- Ministry of the Environment issued the following news:

1. The Ministry of the Environment of Japan has started to certify "Nationally Certified Sustainably Managed Natural Sites," which contribute to biodiversity conservation through private entities' initiatives, to register the sites as OECMs since FY2023.

OECMs: Other Effective area-based Conservation Measures 2. The areas of 64,000 hectares which do not overlap with protected areas, are now registered on the World Database on OECMs (WD-OECM) as Japan's OECMs out of the Nationally Certified Sustainably Managed Natural Sites in FY2024.Together with previously registered OECMs, a total of 545,000 hectares have been registered.
