MASERU, March 19 -- Rising temperatures and erratic weather patterns linked to climate change are creating favourable conditions for the spread of the African armyworm, a destructive pest that threatens food security across Africa. Experts warn that without urgent measures, outbreaks could worsen, putting millions of livelihoods at risk.

The African armyworm (Spodoptera exempta) is a migratory caterpillar that feeds on staple crops such as maize, sorghum, and rice. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), armyworm infestations can destroy entire fields within days, leading to severe yield losses. The pest thrives in warm, humid conditions, which are becoming more common due to climate change.
