The National Commission for Scheduled Castes has taken suo motu cognizance of the alleged statements made by Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee President and Ludhiana Member of Parliament, Mr. Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, against the late Sardar Buta Singh (former Union Home Minister) during the Tarn Taran Assembly by-election in Punjab. Based on media reports and audio-video clips viral on social media, the Commission has learnt that Mr. Warring made objectionable comments regarding the late Buta Singh's religious Sikh origin , belonging to the Balmiki community, and his complexion , which are being seen as caste and colour-based discrimination.
