New Delhi, March 24 -- Coronavirus disease (COVID-19), a new strain discovered in 2019, which had not been previously identified in humans, has thrown up new challenges across the globe and India is no exception.

It was on 31 December 2019, that the World Health Organisation's (WHO) China office learnt that a previously-unknown virus was behind a number of pneumonia cases in Wuhan, a city in Eastern China with a population of over 11 million. Before precautionary measures could be undertaken, it started spreading rather swiftly and dangerously.
