New Delhi/IBNS, July 23 -- The Supreme Court on Tuesday rapped a woman for seeking Rs. 12 crore a year, a house in Mumbai and a BMW car in alimony from her husband stating a qualified woman should earn for themselves, media reports said.

Chief Justice of India BR Gavai made the observation when he was hearing an alimony case where the woman made such demands following separation from her husband after 18 months of their marriage.

The woman argued that her husband is wealthy and claimed he had sought the divorce accusing her of a schizophrenia patient.

Senior advocate Madhavi Divan, who appeared for the husband, objected to such extravagant demands.

CJI Gavai has asked both the parties to submit their financial documents.
