Karur (Tamil Nadu), Sept. 28 -- A horrific tragedy struck Tamil Nadu's Karur district as a stampede at Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay's rally left at least 38 people dead, including 10 children and 17 women, media reports said

NDTV reported, citing officials, that at least 46 people were injured in the stampede.

The grief of the victims' families was heart-wrenching.

The DMK leader held actor-turned-politician Vijay and the rally organisers responsible, claiming that attendees were made to wait for hours under the scorching sun.

Chief Minister MK Stalin described the tragedy as one that has "shaken the hearts of us all". Families of the victims will receive Rs 10 lakh each from the Chief Minister's Public Relief Fund.
