India, Jan. 7 -- A 37-year-old woman has given birth to a baby boy after having ten daughters, an incident that once again underscores the deep-rooted preference for male children in large sections of Indian society.

The woman, married to 38-year-old Sanjay Kumar for the past 19 years, delivered her 11th child at Ojas Hospital and Maternity Home in Uchana town of Haryana's Jind district.

The delivery was classified as high risk, as the mother required three units of blood. "It was a high-risk delivery, but both the mother and the baby are fine," said Dr Narveer Sheoran, who supervised the case, speaking to NDTV.

Sanjay Kumar, a daily-wage labourer, told PTC News that the family had hoped for a son.
