Mumbai, May 2 -- Two years after the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced the withdrawal of Rs.2,000 denomination banknotes, currency worth Rs.6,266 crore remains in circulation, according to the latest official figures.

The RBI reiterated that the withdrawn notes continue to be valid legal tender.

As of April 30, 2025, 98.24% of those notes have been returned to the banking system.

While the facility to deposit or exchange these notes at bank branches was available until October 7, 2023, individuals can still do so at 19 designated RBI issue offices.

From October 9, 2023, people have also been allowed to deposit Rs.2,000 notes at these RBI offices or send them via India Post from any post office for credit into their bank accounts....
