Chennai, March 13 -- The rupee symbol, which was replaced by DMK-led state government in its Budget document with a Tamil letter, was designed by the son of ex-DMK MLA and IIT professor Udaya Kumar Dharmalingam.

The ongoing language dispute between Tamil Nadu and the Centre took a fresh twist on Thursday when Tamil Nadu's MK Stalin led government replaced the rupee symbol.

The rupee symbol's origins trace back to 2010 when Dharmalingam, then a postgraduate at IIT Mumbai, won a national contest to design it.

Hitting out at the DMK government in the state, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s state president K Annamalai wrote on X, "The DMK Government's State Budget for 2025-26 replaces the Rupee Symbol designed by a Tamilian, which was adopte...
