India, Nov. 16 -- Off-spinner Simon Harmer led the carnage as South Africa beat Shubman Gill's India by 30 runs in the opening Test match of the series here on Sunday, taking a 1-0 lead.

In the low-scoring encounter, India needed 124 runs for victory but were bowled out for 93 runs.

Harmer remained the pick of the South African attack, taking 4-21, giving the World Test Champion side a memorable victory on the South Asian coil.

Interestingly, South Africans had trailed India's first innings score by 30 runs but reversed the situation and walked out of the ground with a 30-run victory against the hosts.

Simon Harmer finished the match with 8-51 in two innings, managing four in both, breaking India's dominance on the home turf.
