Kolkata/IBNS, June 16 -- Over 1,000 shops were gutted after a massive fire broke out at the Khidirpur market in Kolkata, media reports said.

The blaze, which started at 1 am, spread rapidly through multiple shops at Khidirpur Dog market.

Over 20 fire tenders were rushed to the spot to control the blaze.

The fire engines worked for the entire night to bring the flames under control.

The cause of the fire is yet unknown.

However, locals have complained that the fire tenders didn't reach the spot on time.
