New Delhi/IBNS, Nov. 24 -- Justice Surya Kant on Monday took oath as the 53rd Chief Justice of India (CJI) succeeding Justice BR Gavai, who demitted his office last evening.
President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath to Justice Kant.
Justice Kant, who was elected to the Supreme Court on May 24, 2019, will serve as the CJI for about 15 months until his retirement on February 9, 2027.
Vice-President C.P. Radhakrishnan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Union Home Minister Amit Shah were present at the swearing-in ceremony.
