India, Oct. 23 -- A 21-year-old Indian national living illegally in the United States has been accused of causing a fiery crash that left three people dead in Southern California.

The man, identified as Jashanpreet Singh, was arrested on charges of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated after his semi-truck ploughed into slow-moving traffic on a San Bernardino County freeway, according to US media reports.

However, he was later released into the country under the Biden administration's "alternatives to detention" policy, which allows undocumented migrants to await immigration hearings outside detention centres.
