New Delhi, April 8 -- The first round of funding for teams working on India-specific generative AI models will begin shortly, Union Minister for Electronics and IT Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Sunday, adding that the evaluation of applications under the IndiaAI mission is nearing completion.

The government is aiming to support the development of indigenous generative AI models within a 10-month timeframe.

It has clarified that the mission will not be limited to large language models (LLMs) but will also include smaller models suited to specific needs.

Vaishnaw also said that there has been a strong response to the second phase of the GPU empanelment process.
