India, Dec. 13 -- West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday issued a public apology after a chaos that unfolded at the iconic Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata during an event which marked Argentine football icon Lionel Messi's return to the city after 14 years.

The unrest forced the World Cup hero to cut short what was meant to be the highlight of his GOAT Tour appearance in Kolkata.

"I sincerely apologise to Lionel Messi, as well as to all sports lovers and his fans, for the unfortunate incident," she said.
