India, April 30 -- At least 14 people died after a massive fire broke out at a hotel in central Kolkata's congested Mechuapatti area on Tuesday.
Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Verma told media: "A fire broke out at Ritu Raj Hotel in Mechuapatti on Tuesday. Several people have been rescued from the hotel."
He said the fire has been brought under control.
According to reports, a Special Investigation Team has been formed to ascertain the cause of the fire. Ten fire engines were rushed to the spot after the fire broke out.
The hotel is located in central Kolkata, where many shops and houses are present.
Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim visited the spot on Tuesday night.
