India, Jan. 7 -- A Hindu businessman died in Bangladesh's Naogaon district after jumping into a canal while trying to escape a mob that was allegedly chasing him on suspicion of theft, media reports said on Wednesday.
The victim was identified as Mithun Sarkar, a resident of Bhandarpur village, News18 reported.
Police recovered his body from the canal on Tuesday.
There has been no official confirmation that Sarkar was involved in any theft.
The incident comes amid a reported spike in attacks on members of the Hindu community in recent months.
One of the victims, Sarat Mani Chakraborty, a Hindu grocery shop owner at Charsindur Bazar in the Narsingdi district, was attacked by unidentified assailants while running his shop.
