India, Jan. 14 -- US President Donald Trump on Wednesday said American control of Greenland was "vital" for national security, linking the Arctic island directly to his proposed Golden Dome air and missile defence system.

"The United States needs Greenland for the purpose of National Security. It is vital for the Golden Dome that we are building," Trump wrote on social media, reiterating his long-standing claim that Washington should take control of the Danish territory.

Trump argued that NATO would become "far more formidable and effective" if Greenland were under US control, warning that any alternative was "unacceptable".
