India, Jan. 4 -- The Congress on Saturday initiated the process of selecting candidates for the upcoming Assembly elections, announcing the formation of Screening Committees for poll-bound states.

In a first, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has been appointed to head the party's Screening Committee for Assam, marking her debut in overseeing candidate selection for the state.

The Screening Committees will be responsible for shortlisting and recommending candidates after consultations with state leaders and party workers.

The development comes as the Congress accelerates preparations to finalise its electoral strategy and streamline decision-making in key battleground states.
