India, March 25 -- Fugitive businessman Mehul Choksi, believed to be in Antigua, has currently taken shelter in Belgium, the European nation has confirmed, as reported by NDTV.

In a communication, the Belgian foreign ministry confirmed that they are aware of his presence and "attach great importance and attention to it".

Indian authorities have earlier reached out to their Belgian counterparts to begin the process of his extradition.

Earlier, he was believed to be residing in Antigua and Barbuda.

However, he left the Caribbean nation for medical treatment, while still holding Antiguan citizenship, Antigua's Foreign Minister EP Chet Greene told ANI on March 19.
