Kolkata/IBNS, Dec. 4 -- Trinamool Congress (TMC) rebel MLA Humayun Kabir was on Thursday suspended from the party after he triggered a political storm by demanding the construction of a mosque modelled after the Babri Masjid in West Bengal's Murshidabad district.

Kabir, a prominent political figure in Bharatpur, was suspended shortly before Chief Minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee's rally in Baharampur.

The 64-year-old, who had been invited to the event, walked out after state minister Firhad Hakim announced the disciplinary action.

Addressing a press conference in Kolkata, Hakim said Kabir was suspended for "not correcting his conduct" despite repeated warnings.
