New Delhi/IBNS, Feb. 5 -- Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a sharp attack on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday, accusing the Trinamool Congress of approaching the courts to shield illegal immigrants.

The remarks were made during his reply in the Rajya Sabha to the Motion of Thanks on the President's Address.

However, the reference was unmistakable and closely linked to developments from a Supreme Court hearing held a day earlier.

The attack followed Mamata Banerjee's appearance before a bench headed by the Chief Justice of India, where she strongly opposed the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
