India, April 28 -- The Centre is mulling new regulations to check obscenity on OTT and social media platforms, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told the Supreme Court.
The SC was hearing a public interest petition (PIL) against display of obscene and objectionable content on these platforms. Calling it a serious issue, a bench of Justices BR Gavai and AG Masih issued notices to the Union government and platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime, AltBalaji, Ullu, Mubi, X, Google, Meta, and Apple, Live Law reported.
Representing the Centre, Mehta said that some programmes are so explicit that "two respectable men cannot sit together and watch them". He stressed the need for regulation without enforcing blanket censorship.
