India, Jan. 29 -- Tech major Amazon has fired over 500 employees in its India offices as part of an ongoing global restructuring exercise under which it plans to lay off more than 16,000 employees, sources told Inc42.

The number of employees impacted in India due to the restructuring exercise is estimated to be between 500 and 700, according to multiple sources.

Tech and HR teams were the most impacted by the layoffs, with software development engineer (SDE) roles seeing the highest number of pink slips.

Amazon declined to comment on Inc42's questions on the layoffs and instead directed to an internal note shared by Beth Galetti, senior vice president of people experience and technology of the company, yesterday.
