Manipur, Oct. 21 -- In an order considered truly significant for a state like Manipur, Civil Judge, Senior Division, Imphal East has directed a woman to pay Rs 70 lakh as compensation to the legal wife of a man with whom the former has been cohabiting.
The court's order under the tort law has decreed that a monetary compensation of Rs. 10 lakh should be paid by the woman to the legal wife for "causing loss of consortium, nervous shock and also for causing mental distress" with effect from the third week of June, 2016; Rs. 10 lakh again for lowering the reputation of the legal wife in the eyes of the society, and also a monetary compensation of Rs. 50 lakh for "punitive or exemplary damages."
