Young widow shot dead in Bhagalpur for not sharing contact details
BHAGALPUR, Aug. 1 -- A young widow was shot dead by a co-villager after she allegedly refused to share her contact number, in Bihar's Bhagalpur district on Thursday, police said.
The victim, Meena Devi (26), was a resident of Karari Tintanga village under Gopalpur police station limits. Her husband, Jitendra Ram, had died during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2021. Since then, Meena had been the sole breadwinner for her family, which included her two minor children and mother-in-law.
According to locals, the accused, identified as Prakash Mandal (29), shot Meena after an altercation. "She had a small shop, which she started by taking a group loan through Jeevika to support her family," said Kanchan Devi, a neighbour. "She had an argument with Prakash after refusing to give him her mobile number. He had been harassing her for some time."
Kanchan further alleged that Prakash, a habitual drunkard, frequently misbehaved with Meena, and despite her repeated complaints, police had failed to act. Soon after the incident, enraged villagers managed to snatch the pistol from the assailant, but he managed to flee....
