PATNA, Sept. 26 -- Violence and arson took place on the premises of government-run Nalanda Engineering College under Chandi police station of Nalanda district on Wednesday night after a girl student died allegedly by suicide (jumping from third floor) at her college hostel. The 20-year-old was a resident of Bariarpur block in Munger district. According to fellow students, the victim, a second year student pursuing civil engineering, took this extreme step allegedly due to ragging and negligence by college administration. Students alleged they were thrashed by seniors as part of ragging. College authorities said the girl died instantly after falling from a rooftop under circumstances that remained unclear. The incident sparked outrage among students, who resorted to vandalism on the campus. They alleged principal Gopal Nandan and the dean did not provide their personal vehicle to take the injured to the hospital on time, which worsened the situation. Police registered FIRs on the complaints by family members of the victim. Recalling her last interaction with the girl, her roommate said, "Around 9 pm, I asked her to come along for dinner, but she said she had eaten snacks and was full. I went to the mess after this. When I returned, her laptop was on but she was not there. I tried reaching her, but she did not answer the phone calls. When I looked downstairs, I found her body lying in a pool of blood." Hostel inmates said she was mentally disturbed allegedly due to ragging, which might have forced her to take the extreme step. This is the second incident in Bihar's state-owned engineering colleges this month. Bhagalpur Engineering College had earlier suspended 10 students for a year and fined 29 others for their alleged involvement in violent clashes between two groups of students on the campus on September 12, which left four people injured. Nalanda SP Bharat Soni said,"Exact cause of death has not been ascertained yet. Complaints of ragging are being probed." The principal declined to comment on the matter saying he would address it later. SDM, Hilsa, Amit Kumar Patel said the body of the deceased girl had been sent for postmortem examination....
