GAYA JI, May 25 -- A villager was injured when he came across the army practice firing range situated at Deori Dumari village under Barachatti police station area of Gaya ji district on Friday evening, police said. The man, identified as Birendra Manjhi (35), from nearby Bighi village entered the restricted area to collect empty bullet shells made of brass. A Medium Machine Gun (MMG) bullet, after being reversed from a stone, hit on the right side of the stomach and critically injured him, Barachatti additional SHO sub-inspector Mantu Kumar said. Army officers and soldiers doing firing practice rushed to the place with ambulance and medical staff. They gave first aid and admitted the injured man to Anugrah Narayan Magadh Medical College and Hospital at Gaya Ji. "Army men did a commendable job by donating three units of blood which saved the poor man's life who was critical and losing sense after profuse bleeding. Now his condition was stable," the additional SHO said. Local mukhiya Sanjiv Kumar alias Guddu said that Army officers and soldiers were doing two days of MMG firing practice at the firing range on May 23 and 24. The villagers were duly informed about the firing practice and asked not to go around the firing range. Despite warnings by the army, police and local bodies, poor people of the area often risk their lives in the greed of picking up the brass shells.
