Vigilance vital in age of AI, avoid sharing personal data on social media: Senior cop
Dehradun, Dec. 16 -- Additional superintendent of police (ASP) Ankush Mishra (STF cyber cell) on Monday stressed on the growing risks posed by artificial intelligence-enabled cybercrime and urged people to remain vigilant online. He also advised people against sharing personal information on social media platforms.
Addressing the fifth technical session on the third day of the national convention of the Public Relations Society of India (PRSI), Mishra said cybercrimes have become more sophisticated with the advent of AI. "Today, people can fall victim to cyber fraud while sitting at home. AI can be misused to clone voices and create deepfake videos, making crimes more deceptive and dangerous," he said.
He cautioned against clicking on unknown links and oversharing personal or professional details online. Mishra also warned that circulating deepfake content is a criminal offence. "Anyone who creates or shares deepfake videos will be considered equally guilty," he said, urging parents to closely monitor their children's activities online. Emphasising awareness over fear, he added, "Do not fear AI, but understand it and stay alert."
The session began with a presentation by Vinay Jaiswal, assistant general manager at the Steel Authority of India Limited who highlighted the expanding role of artificial intelligence in public relations.
