Video of Masaurhi jail inmates enjoying a drug party goes viral
PATNA, June 4 -- A video from Masaurhi sub-divisional jail has gone viral, showing inmates allegedly enjoying a "drug party" and using mobile phones inside the prison. Reportedly shot by another inmate-who is currently out on bail-the video shows a history-sheeter in cell (ward number-1) with a glass of liquor and contraband such as ganja.
According to the video, inmates were allegedly given special food, alcohol, cigarettes, and other favours by jail officials in exchange for bribes. The video grab shows a group of inmates using their mobile phones and openly passing around drugs, while no police personnel are seen near the prisoners.
Following the viral video, the prison department has ordered a probe under the supervision of Beur jail superintendent Niraj Kumar Jha.
Masaurhi jail superintendent Mahesh Kumar Razak, however, claimed that the video appears to be old. "I don't really know about this incident, but I think this is an old video being misused now. We do not have any idea about the location where the video was shot, nor who recorded it. The jail authorities will first identify the people in the video and also find out when it was recorded," he said.
The Opposition has seized on the video, with the RJD questioning how the state government under chief minister Nitish Kumar can ensure law and order outside if criminals cannot be controlled inside the jail premises.
Meanwhile, the Masaurhi Lawyers' Association, led by its general secretary Rakesh Kumar, earlier submitted a memorandum to SDO Amit Kumar Patel, pointing out irregularities and malpractices inside the jail....
