VIB arrests university assistant registrar for taking Rs.2.5 lakh bribe
PATNA, April 29 -- In a crackdown involving a higher education institution, an assistant registrar of Maulana Mazharul Haq Arabic-Farsi University, was arrested by the vigilance investigation bureau (VIB) on Tuesday while he was caught red-handed accepting a bribe of Rs. 2.5 lakh in his official chamber.
Assistant registrar Mohammad Sanaullah Khan was accepting the bribe in exchange for processing a file related to knowledge research centre (KRC) running at Rosera in Samastipur. The complaint was brought to the attention of the DG VIB by the victim Ramanand Mahto who reported the incident and testified against Khan in presence of witnesses.
VIB said Mahato had filed a written complaint with the VIB on March 13, 2026 alleging that the university's vice-chancellor (VC)Alamgir Sahab was demanding Rs. 5 lakh for approval of two KRCs. Citing his financial condition, Mahato agreed to pay Rs. 2.5 lakh at the moment and gave complete information to the VIB.
VIB sleuths verified the allegation and laid a trap. KRCs are outsourced to private parties for running it and they have been in controversy in the past due to corrupt practices. A senior official said outsourcing of vocational courses, KRCs, exam-related work or even hiring of security guards in the universities has been established practices for corruption.
As soon as Mahato handed over Rs. 2.5 lakh to Khan as per the deal, he was caught by the VIB team led by DSP Shyam Babu Prasad and the entire bribe amount was recovered from his almirah. After the arrest, Khan, while talking to media persons in the university premises, claimed that he was only a conduit and the demand was made by the VC. "I have audio records related to VC's order. The bribe giver is said to be close to the VC," he claimed.
However, Mahto told reporters that he has conducted two separate practical examinations of 75 candidates whose results are kept pending by the university authority and demand for bribe has been made in the name of KRC. Now the VIB is investigating the role of the VC and others in the case. DSP Shyam Babu Prasad said, "The team is conducting raids at various places, including Khan's office and residence. Documents and electronic devices were also seized."...
