Undertrial prisoner dies, kin allege torture
PATNA, May 22 -- An undertrial prisoner died under mysterious circumstances at district jail in Sitamarhi late on Tuesday, officials said.
The deceased was identified as Mukeshwar Rai (35), a resident of Paktola village which falls under the jurisdiction of Dumra police station. Following the incident, the family members of the deceased raised serious concerns, alleging that he was subjected to custodial torture by the jail staff.
Deceased's son, Golu Kumar, said two personnel from Dumra police station had arrested his father on May 17. He alleged his father was murdered. He had been kept in the isolation ward and was found in an unconscious state early on Tuesday. He died during treatment.
After getting information, Mukeshwar's family reached the hospital, created ruckus and demanded a high-level inquiry into the incident.
"His body was replete with wounds at back and feet. Adequate compensation must be given to us for the untimely demise of our family member," said Golu.
Jail superintendent Manoj Kumar Sinha, however, refuted the charges of murder and said as per the symptoms, 'Chronic Alcoholic' is suspected to be the reason behind his death. A three-member medical board conducted his postmortem and the report is awaited. Local police have registered an unnatural death case and the body has been handed over to the family members after the autopsy on Wednesday.
SDPO (Sadar-1) Ramkrishna said Mukeshwar had been absconding in a case since 2023 after his regular bail bond was cancelled by the court. An arrest warrant had been later issued against him. "The exact cause of the death will be clear after the autopsy report is received. Investigation into the case is on," the SDPO added....
