Two advocates grievously assaulted in court premises
BHABUA, June 21 -- Advocates in Kaimur district expressed anger and concern after two of their colleagues were attacked on the Mohania sub-divisional court campus on Thursday, police said.
According to reports, miscreants led by Nandlal Prajapati of Majhari village allegedly abused and assaulted advocate Abhishek Kumar Singh and advocate Anupam Rai as they were exiting the courtroom of the First Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate.
Singh, who sustained injuries in the incident, claimed that Prajapati was furious with him for representing his rival party in a legal dispute. "Prajapati had already issued life threats to my clerk," Singh said in his statement to the police.
The assault occurred around 1:15 pm, when Singh was coming out of the courtroom. "Prajapati and five of his aides surrounded me, pushed me to the ground, tore my clothes, and attempted to strangle me," he alleged. When advocate Rai intervened, the attackers reportedly assaulted him as well, causing profuse bleeding from his nose, Singh stated in the FIR lodged at Mohania police station.
Hearing the commotion, several advocates rushed to the spot. The attackers tried to flee on motorcycles. While the advocates managed to catch Prajapati and his bike, he escaped with the help of his associates. Police later seized the unregistered motorcycle used in the attack.
A case has been registered, and the main accused, Nandlal Prajapati, was arrested late Thursday night, said Superintendent of Police Hari Mohan Shukla, adding that raids are ongoing to apprehend the remaining culprits.
The incident has sparked outrage within the legal fraternity. Ravindra Nath Chaubey, president of the District Advocates' Association, and Mantu Pandey, general secretary, condemned the attack, calling it unprecedented in Kaimur judgeship. "This is an attack on our right to practice law. Advocates are feeling insecure," they said.
