PATNA/ARA, July 23 -- Three people, wanted in the murder of gangster Chandan Mishra at a hospital in Patna, were arrested in Bihar's Bhojpur district on Tuesday following a gunfight with the police and two of them getting bullet injuries, officials said. Those arrested were identified as Balwant Kumar, Raviranjan Kumar Singh and Abhisekh Kumar, they said. Balwant and Raviranjan were shot at as they tried to escape when police approached them, police officers aware of the raid said. Shahabad range deputy inspector general of police (DIG) Satyaprakash confirmed the incident and said that the alleged shooters, Balwant and Raviranjan, are natives of Buxar and Bhojpur respectively. Police had identified five shooters from the CCTV footage that had caught them entering the ICU room number 209 of Paras hospital in Patna on July 17 early morning. While the lead shooter, Tausif Badshah, who was uncapped unlike other four, was immediately recognised after the CCTV video went viral. The third was identified as Balwant and fifth as Raviranjan. Balwant has also been named in the FIR filed by Mishra's father as an accused in the Chandan Mishra murder case and the Patna police had even pasted a proclamation order at his house on Saturday. The Tuesday shootout took place at around 5am when the STF intercepted a group of criminals said to be linked to Mishra's murder. Acting on a tip-off, STF Patna and Bhojpur police launched a joint operation near Katia Road in Bihia police station area. The input had indicated that three accused in the Chandan Mishra murder case were present near Bihiya railway station and were heavily armed. As the police team moved in and asked the suspects to surrender, the accused opened fire. In retaliation, the police also fired, injuring two criminals -- Balwant and Raviranjan. Balwant sustained bullet shots in his hand and leg while Raviranjan received bullet injuries on his thigh. All three of them were apprehended. Police recovered three firearms, two magazines and four live cartridges from their possession. Bhojpur superintendent of police (SP) Raj said that the accused even tried to target a local villager during the encounter, but swift action by the police prevented any civilian casualty. The injured were first taken to Ara Sadar hospital for treatment under tight security where doctors referred them to the PMCH. Police said that Balwant is the person who continuously contacted Onkar Nath Singh alias Sheru Singh, the alleged mastermind currently lodged in Purulia jail of West Bengal. Balwant was responsible for arranging shooters who eliminated Chandan Mishra, who once was Sheru's friend and himself a gangster, while he was out on parole and admitted in the hospital to undergo some surgery. Balwant, according to police investigation, also provided them with weapons for the killing. He reportedly acted entirely under Sheru's instructions, meticulously coordinating each step of the assassination. Abhishek Kumar, another accomplice, was waiting outside the hospital when the incident took place. He was caught in CCTV footage wearing a helmet. Earlier on Saturday, Bihar Police STF in a joint operation with the Kolkata Police, arrested Tausif along with his cousin Nishu Khan and two aides, Harsh and Bhim, from Kolkata. Tausif was sent to a three-day police remand while the others were remanded to judicial custody. All the four were produced in the ACJM IX court late on Monday after the Patna police brought them on transit remand from Kolkata. Overall, seven people, including three shooters, have been arrested in the case so far. Police said that it had been investigating all those arrested, especially main shooter Tausif, to unearth more information in the case....
