GAYA JI, July 21 -- A 60-year-old tribal man was kidnapped and beaten to death on suspicion of being a sorcerer at Bardiha village under Tankuppa police station of Gaya Ji district, police said on Sunday. After being informed that elderly Birju Manjhi had been kidnapped and was traceless from Friday night, a case was registered with Tankuppa police station. Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Anand Kumar formed a special investigation team (SIT) under Wazirganj sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) Sunil Kumar Pandey. The SIT took two suspects including a woman into custody on Saturday. First, they denied any involvement but spilled the beans when police acted tough during interrogation. Suspect Shyamdev Manjhi of Bardiha confessed to the kidnapping and murder of the elderly man. He said four members of his family died unnaturally in a short period. He believed that Birju, a sorcerer and witchcraft practitioner, was behind the deaths, police said. Shyamdev decided to kill the alleged sorcerer to save other members of his family and hatched a plan with some friends. They caught him and assaulted him till he died. They dug a pit and buried the body in a field outside Kolhan village to destroy evidence. Both were arrested, police said. Police recovered the body on his identification from the place and sent it to Anugrah Narayan Magadh Medical College and Hospital at Gaya Ji for autopsy on Sunday. The SSP said raids were on to arrest the other accused. He appealed to people not to believe in superstition and witchcraft and inform police instead of taking law in their hands....
