BETTIAH, June 1 -- At least three minor children drowned on Saturday after they allegedly entered the Budhi Gandak river to bathe, seeking relief from the extreme heatwave conditions in East Champaran district. Confirming the incident, Pipra's Station House Officer (SHO), Nitesh Kumar, said the bodies of Ajit Kumar (7), Manisha Kumari (12), and Chhotu Kumar (8) were recovered from the Budhi Gandak river near Rashmandal village under the jurisdiction of Pipra police station. "Arrangements are being made to send the bodies for postmortem," the SHO said. According to feedback from local residents, the children had initially gone to the riverbank to cut grass, but because of the scorching heat around 3 pm on Saturday, they decided to take a bath in the river.
