Haldwani/Dehradun, Nov. 18 -- Communal tension erupted in Haldwani in Nainital district after part of a carcass was found near a temple on Sunday evening, police said. The body part, as per police officers, was discovered near Ujaleshwar Mahadev temple and the situation escalated quickly as members of Hindu outfits gathered in large numbers, vandalised shops, vehicles, pelted stones, and assaulted people in the vicinity. The police resorted to lathi charge to disperse the crowd and has deployed additional police and paramilitary forces to prevent other incidents. The police also registered two FIRs in the matter at Banbhoolpura police station -- one for the recovery of the parts of the animal and another for violence. Prima facie, the police said they have found that the animal part wasn't thrown deliberately near the temple, since it can be seen in the CCTV footage that it was brought to the place by a dog in its mouth. Superintendent of police (city) Haldwani, Manoj Katyal, said they received information about recovery of a part of carcass near the temple around 7.40 pm. "Police rushed to the spot. A forensic team was also dispatched to collect the remains for examination," he said. "As we were registering the FIR for the recovery of the remaining parts of the animal, anti-social elements started demanding action. Tension escalated when the crowd started pelting stones and vandalising shops, and assaulting people in the area. We brought the situation under control," he said. SP(Crime) Dr Jagdish Chandra said, "The police teams have scanned CCTV footage from the surrounding area, which showed a dog carrying what appeared to be the remains. The exact identity of the animal will be confirmed only after a detailed forensic examination. Police and forensic experts have collected samples from the site and sent them for examination." A police official, on condition of anonymity, said, "It has come to light that the protestors deliberately targeted the shops and vehicles owned by Muslims." Katyal said, "We have so far received no complaint from those either beaten or whose shops or vehicles were vandalised." In the first FIR, Ravindra Gupta, a member of the temple committee of the Ujaleshwar Mahadev temple, said the severed head of a calf was discovered near the temple which has hurt the sentiments of the Hindus. Based on his complaint, a FIR was registered against unidentified people under sections of BNS and relevant sections of the Uttarakhand Protection of Cow Progeny Act, 2007. The second FIR -- filed for violence on complaint of Banbhoolpura SHO Sushil Kumar Joshi -- was registered under several sections of BNS. Haldwani MLA Sumit Hridayesh said a few were giving a communal angle to the incident and called it "unfortunate"....
